MechDes performed control calculations for its client Boskalis Nederland, which works on infrastructure projects on land and water in the Netherlands. The motivation for this was that one of the axles of an existing winch had broken off. Boskalis wanted to know why this happened and how it could be prevented in the future.
To determine the cause, control calculations were performed on the entire gearbox. This meant, among other things, calculations of the shafts, bearings, gears and the possible deformation of the gearbox as a result of (heavy) load.
In addition, at the request of Boskalis, we calculated the new design in order to detect any weaknesses. This allowed the design to be optimized before revision would take place. And with success. Boskalis received a clear answer and will be able to manufacture their winches differently in the future, while guaranteeing quality and strength.
